Today I got the opportunity to talk with Jason DeGray, author of dystopian science-fiction.
Hi, Jason! What’s the first book you ever remember reading?
The Terrible Troll by Mercer Mayer. It really stuck with me because it doesn’t end in the way a children’s book normally would. It’s kinda dark, actually, and had a profound impact on me that has stuck with me throughout my life.
What inspired you to start writing?
It was a way for me to share the stories in my imagination with people
Who is your main inspiration?
Philip K. Dick, a scifi writer, for many reasns. The least of which is his ability to write relatable “normal Joe” characters. All his protagonists were blue collar people trying to get by that got caught up in extraordinary circumstances. And he had some real insight into the psyche of people that really shines through in his characters. Not to mention he was a fascinating person.
Aside from writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy reading, hanging out with my sons, and going to thrift stores looking for cool books.
Tell me about your writing space. Where do you usually write?
I enjoy writing outdoors at coffee shops and cafes. I get a table, spread out my laptop and materials and get to work.
Are you a morning or night person? What time of day do you prefer to sit and write?
I write better in the morning, but family and work stuff doesn’t leave much time for that. So I write at night or whenever I can sneak off during the day for a couple of hours.
Do you plan out your stories or are you a pantser (making it up as you go along)?
Both. I have the direction I want to go, but part of the fun of writing for me is going along on that journey with the characters. I enjoy being as surprised as they are at what happens next.
What’s your favourite book genre? Do you write in that genre?
I like scifi/fantasy and yes I do write in the genre.
Tell me your top three favourite books of all time.
VALIS by Philip K. Dick, Imajica by Clive Barker, and The Nag Hammadi Library by James M. Robinson.
Who is your favourite book character who you’ve created?
Infinity Jones. He hails from The Realm of Possibility and loves sharing good stories over coffee.
What’s your latest book about?
It’s called 3vE. Corporate Denver is a futuristic cesspool of crime, depravity, and excess. Those with Status have access to the world’s depleting resources, those who don’t struggle to keep one step ahead of death. Integration Technologies consultant Jacob Riley wades through the dystopian morass hunting people whose cybernetic enhancements have glitched and turned them into raving monsters.
But a unique job opportunity sends this former family man on a quest to do something he swore never to do: help the elites who oppress him. When he meets 3vE, a hybrid genetically modified human who escaped from a corporate lab, everything he believes and holds dear is challenged as he plunges headlong into the shadows of a dying earth, racing to stop the ruling elite’s endgame for humanity.
Sounds fascinating! Somewhere between scifi and dystopian. OK, something unrelated to writing! If you could go on a date with any celebrity, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Jennifer Connolly. I’ve loved her work since Labyrinth.
Where can we find out more about you? (Your blog, your social media, etc)
Thank you, Jason!
