Today I chatted with R.R. Rippy, author of An Average Man.

Hi! Thanks for talking with me today. Tell us about your book.
Adventure, first contact, space battles, an interplanetary civilization … and giants.
An Average Man and his teenage daughter are whisked away to a mysterious planet where an ancient civilization is threatened.
A melange of traditional old school science fiction, with a side of space navy. A first contact novel of discovery and fellowship.
This book is set in a world where people of ancient times knew much more than most acknowledge today.
What’s the first book you ever remember reading?
Andre Norton – Star Gate.
What inspired you to start writing?
Reading. I wanted to create these stories myself.
Who is your main inspiration?
Andre Norton and Robert Heinlein.
Aside from writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
Spend family time. Work the homestead.
Tell me about your writing space. Where do you usually write?
On the porch in my armchair, at night.
Are you a morning or night person? What time of day do you prefer to sit and write?
Definitely not a morning person! Haha.
Do you plan out your stories or are you a pantser (making it up as you go along)?
I’m a mix. I do a lot if works building, plan the general events, then let them flow.
Tell me your top three favourite books of all time.
That’s hard!
Maybe Have Space Suit – Will Travel by Robert Heinlein. This is an early read for me and inspired me to be practical like the characters.
The Time Traders by Andre Norton. Also an early read but this one was action and excitement and I wanted to be in the world where you could experience such things.
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. This came out when I was an adult. Card has a way of building characters better than almost any other writer. The way he describes motivations is what I wish I could do.

Who is your favourite book character you’ve created?
I think RahFel in my book. He’s fine, he’s exciting, he’s just full of character and humor.
OK, something unrelated to writing! If you could go on a date with any celebrity, living or dead, who would it be and why?
None. My wife fulfills any dream or fantasy that I ever could’ve had and goes way beyond that. 🙂
Oh, that’s so sweet! Where can we find out more about you?
You can find me on my Facebook page. My website, RippyBooks, is here.
Thank you!
