Today I talked with Anne C. Miles, author of Sorrowfish.
Hi, Anne! Thanks for chatting with me today. Tell us about your book.
A bard, a wizard and a college student from Kentucky must break an ancient curse. It’s a portal fantasy with a musical magic system. And dragons!
A musical magic system! That sounds fascinating. I do love music in books. What’s the first book you ever remember reading?
The first book I remember reading was a children’s book. I think it was called Ann and Sam Ride the Bus. I was two years old and it was a book included with a series of workbooks. My father was a teacher.
Pretty impressive you can remember reading as young as two! What inspired you to start writing?
I got angry with a very famous author, with what he said about Jesus, and decided to outwrite him.
Interesting! I’d love to know who it was and what they said. Who is your main inspiration?
My main inspiration is Cosmic DJ, the person playing the music in my noggin.
Aside from writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to play the violin and XBOX and spoil my grandchildren.
Gamer granny, I love it! Tell me about your writing space. Where do you usually write?
I normally write on my couch or in my gazebo outside if the weather is nice.
I bet writing outside is so relaxing. Are you a morning or night person? What time of day do you prefer to sit and write?
I write in the mornings.
Morning gang! Do you plan out your stories or are you a pantser (making it up as you go along)?
I plan and then throw my plans out the window when the characters tell me what they want to do. It happens most of the time.
What’s your favourite book genre? Do you write in that genre?
Yes, I write in the fantasy genre and it is my favorite.
Tell me your top three favourite books of all time.
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, and The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan.
Tolkien’s work inspires me to think about the words I choose when I write and to always seek transcendence and to lift people up. Lewis wrote a wonderful and approachable mythology and gave us Aslan, for which I will ever be grateful. Jordan tried to write a cycle to demonstrate that there is no free will outside a linear view of time. He also showed me how important the dynamics of friendship are, even within a great sweeping epic fantasy.
Three great books and great reasons to love them! Have you ever read a book that changed your life?
Yes. The Wheel of Time came along when I needed it. I was involved in a very legalistic mindset toward others and The Children of the Light showed me how I was treating others. I needed to change and make changes in my life. I ended up divorced. I went back to school, and I moved to a new city.
Wow, that’s so amazing a book series changed your life that much! How fascinating. Who is your favourite book character you’ve created?
Tabor. He is a thief and a cad. He is also a member of the nobility and leader of a secret society determined to keep the Song alive. I adore him.
What’s your latest book about?
It is called Draig and is about my main character Dane as he goes to recover a refrain of the lost Lorica from a race of Chymaera who resemble dragons.
OK, something unrelated to writing! If you could go on a date with any celebrity, living or dead, who would it be and why?
George MacDonald, who wrote The Princess and the Goblin because I think he is amazing. Him or Terry Pratchett.
